GTECH gives new library group supplies

Providence Community Library, the new non-profit organization managing Providence's nine neighborhood libraries, today announced an important new partnership with GTECH. GTECH, the leader in gaming technology and services, has provided a start-up grant in the form of computers and related equipment to support PCL's administrative and technical staff. In addition, GTECH, in consultation with the Providence City Council, will seek to establish After School Advantage (ASA) computer learning labs in the neighborhood libraries, initially targeting the Wanskuck, Fox Point and Mt. Pleasant libraries. The ASA labs are designed for children to use after school to develop their computer skills and gain the necessary tools to help them become more competitive in school and in today's job market. The computers will also be available to adult patrons for job searches and skills training.

A great group at Wanskuck!"GTECH's gift of the computers for administrative and technical staff is a great boon to us," said Ann Robinson, Director of PCL. "It better enables us to concentrate our funds on providing books and services for the community."

"It is a marvelous partnership," said Marcus Mitchell, President of the Board of the Providence Community Library. "GTECH's gift of computer labs enables the youth of Providence to develop the technological skills necessary to compete in a the 21st century workplace."

GTECH has committed itself to a national community investment program, After School Advantage, which provides non-profit community agencies and public schools with state-of-the-art computer labs. GTECH has previously installed 13 ASA labs in community centers throughout Providence.

"As an outgrowth of our joint efforts with the Providence City Council on the ASA program, we look forward to working with the leadership of PCL to help revitalize the City's neighborhood library system with the addition of these computer learning centers," said Robert Vincent, GTECH Senior Vice President of Corporate Affairs. "PCL's libraries provide invaluable services to all the capital city's residents and provide outstanding locations for these new computer labs."

Mayor David Cicilline praised the partnership ""I am gratified that the program we initiated with GTECH when it moved to Providence continues to expand, reaching three more neighborhood libraries. I am also grateful to GTECH for showing additional support of the Providence Community Library by aiding its administrative capacity with the donation of new computers."

Wanskuck and Fox Point, two of the three libraries to receive the new computer centers, were slated for permanent closure before Providence Community Library assumed operation of the nine neighborhood libraries that formerly constituted the branch library system of the Providence Public Library.
